I’ve always loved finding things.
A leather handbag in a cute op shop, a new favourite pair of shoes, a vest that reminds me of my Mum, an old watch you can tell was worn every single day, a song that I play on repeat until I can no longer listen to it.
That’s why I first fell in love with thrifting.
It started when I first got my license and finally had the freedom to explore.
I would drive to country towns and look through tiny op shops, chat with the old ladies that ran the store, find a cute top and a photo frame, and listen to my favourite songs on the drive home.
And over time, as I thrifted more and more, found things that resonated with me and weaved them into my life, I began to realise that I was creating that version of myself that I always wanted to be.
The kind of person who wears maxi skirts and Mary Janes, mixed with colourful layered tops, vests and warm colours.
Who reads books on the tram to meet her friends for a coffee in the city, before heading to a vintage market.
I believe the right clothes are so powerful.
There’s something about wearing an outfit, looking in the mirror and going
“Oh, there I am.”
Maybe you know exactly what you like.
Maybe you’re still figuring that out.
Maybe you have five different versions of yourself that you wish you could be.
I go treasure hunting for pieces that make me go
“Oh, someone is going to absolutely LOVE this.”
And bring them back for you to discover, and hopefully, have that same feeling
Just take your time. Linger.
And you might just find something completely unexpected that speaks to you.
And when you do, go and live your life in that item.
Catch that tram.
Read that book.
Meet your friends.
Go to the pub.
Try something new.
Make mistakes.
Have a really good Thursday for no good reason.
And then suddenly that cute jacket that you found becomes the jacket you wore that winter.
So, Welcome to Zip Vintage.
Take your time, have a look around.
And maybe you'll find something you love.
Love,
Allie
Why is it called Zip Vintage?
Honestly, I just liked the name when I started this business 4 years ago, and I just stuck with it!
I wanted something short, memorable and not too serious, and so, zip vintage was born!
What is your favourite thing about second hand clothes?
The fact that you never really know what you’re going to find!
I love walking into an op shop with no idea what I am looking for and just getting lost discovering what is there.
It’s almost like a bit of mindfulness.
Do you keep everything that you find?
Gosh, I wish haha.
I often say to people when they buy something “I had to stop myself from keeping that” and it’s so true.
But I must say, I have kept a few of my favourite things here and there hehe.
What is your favourite part of this job?
Honestly, the interactions with people when they find their piece.
Hearing someone audibly gasp at a market and go “oh my god, this is so ME!” and be so excited to show it to their friends is one of the best feelings ever.
Helping people become one step closer to expressing themselves through their clothes is my why.
